Ace Hotel Toronto

When I thought about the art insight for Ace Toronto, I wanted to make sure the idea resonated with the beautiful building Shim Sutcliffe was making, and with the story of the city. And one thing that kept coming up was that over 200 languages are spoken in Toronto, making it one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the entire world. What if the rooms had artwork with a small poem about what “home” meant to that artist? And a hotel is your temporary home so it welcomes you to the city.

The hotel celebrates work by Nadia Gohar, Shelagh Keeley, Ale Groen, Madison van Rijn, David Kaye, Lili Lee, Guillermo Trejo, Sigma Foxx, Dalia Hassan, Tahsine Hassane, and Claudia Gutierrez. One poem still gives me goose bumps. Mi’kmaw artist and poet Jennifer Alicia wrote a piece that gives a nod the real name of Toronto, Tkaronto, translating to where the trees are standing in the water in Mohawk.

carrying memories like bloodlines
rooted to the earth
home is ever flowing within us
let's meet where the trees are standing in the water
